Bordeaux is the world's wine industry capital, with a yearly turnover presently estimated at around 9 billion US dollars. The eponymous wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century. The Bordeaux-Arcachon-Liibourne metropolitan area is the fifth largest metropolitan area in France. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensmeble" of the 18th century. More recently, Bordeaux has become the center of Europe's growing space and aeronautics industries.
