An exhibition billed as brief road trip through the many myths of the great American West, from the late 1800s to the 1990s, will be on view at the Musée des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux (Bordeaux, France), part of the year-long celebration of the Los Angeles-Bordeaux Sister City 50th anniversary. Over 70 photographs from the permanent collection of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will highlight imagery both inspired by and of the West. Representing a core component of the collection, the exhibition is organized around several broad themes, seeking to define the west by more than the literal and expected “landscape”: the nature of the West, the evolving hardscape, a new sublime, the banal, and the landscape as defined by the people. Included in this overview will be artists strongly associated with West (Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Robert Adams), and others whose association is no less integral, but whose resulting imagery presents a conceptual and abstracted vision of what became The West (John Divola, David Maisel, Aaron Siskind).
