Forging Closer Ties with Cuba
January 3, 2017 - January 6, 2017Event Description
For the last year, SCOLA has been working on building a city to city relationship with Havana, Cuba. This is a vibrant city with a strong bioscience/biomedical and educational sector, like Los Angeles.
On January 3-6, 2017, at the invitation of Alaska Airlines, SCOLA joined their historic and memorable inaugural flight to Cuba. This was a remarkable experience. From January 7-12, SCOLA organized a small delegation from Los Angeles to further explore Havana’s bioscience, medical, educational, historical preservation and business collaboration prospects. The delegation included UCLA, World Trade Center Los Angeles, LA Economic Development Corporation, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board and the Annenberg Foundation.
The overall trip was quite successful and opened a door to continue to build closer ties between Los Angeles and Havana, and promote the direct connection that we have through Alaska Airlines.
On May 18-24, with the support of Alaska Airlines, SCOLA partnered with the UCLA Center for World Health, to host two leading Cuban Scientists from the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. This important exchange between UCLA and the Center opened the door for the initial sharing mutual talents and knowledge on critical research. We truly hope this exchange will lead to exceptional collaboration on scientific research that can jointly address some of the most critical medical challenges of our time.
